Today's class - Groundwork

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Today we will be be practicing using our computers and tablets for digital illustration.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: By making an artwork in our digital drawing program, you will begin developing your understanding of how we will be working for the rest of the school year.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow instructions to create a digital artwork using our drawing software and tablets.

Assignment - Digital drawing practice

Create a digital drawing using krita with our tablets

Requirements:

Use three or more brush settings

Use three or more colors

Draw for the entire class time provided

Change your canvas settings

your canvas is the digital space where you do your drawing/painting.

You can change the length and width of your canvas in the setup window after you hit "create new image"

We will make our canvas wider than it is tall by hitting the "landscape orientation" button on the setup screen.

Notice the red arrows pointing to this button in the image to the left.

When you click create your canvas should look like this

Change your Brushes

We will be drawing using the brush tool.

The icon for the brush tool looks like the image to the left.

The arrows on the left point to the brush tool in your tool bar.

The arrows on the left point to the types of brush tools you can use.

There are many styles of brushes, and some will look like pencils, some like markers, some like chalk, etc.

There are many types of brushes and brush effects. Experiment with them to see what brushes you like.

above the brush settings you can find the layers panel.

There should always be a layer called "background".

This layer should be locked, blank and white.

If you want to draw or paint, you need to create a seperate layer on top of the background.

if you don't have a working layer above the background, you need to create one.

Hit the plus button at the bottom right of the layers panel to create a new layer

the last feature you should notice today is the color picker.

This should be in the top right of your working space, above the layers panel.

With the color picker, you can change what color you want as well as how light, dark, or faded you want it to be.

Moving around the outer rainbow wheel changes your color.

Moving the dot within the triangle changes how light, dark or faded that color will be.

play around with these options. your assignment will be to turn in an artwork that uses multiple brushes and colors.

Export as a .jpg file

Before you can turn in your work, you will need to export your file in the correct format

To do this you will need to click the file tab at the top left of your screen.

Then you will scroll down and click where it says "Export"

The export window will open and give you options how to save your file

Make sure to save it in your Art and Media folder.

Make sure to name it "Digital Drawing Practice."

Finally, click the tab that says "Save as Type".

From the list that pops up, choose the option that says ".JPG Image"

After you select the file type, then hit "Save".

LOG IN TO PHOTOSHOP

WHEN YOU OPEN UP PHOTOSHOP YOU WILL SEE THIS SCREEN.

CLICK THE BLUE BUTTON THAT SAYS "NEW".

THE NEW DOCUMENT WINDOW WILL OPEN

CHOOSE "DEFAULT PHOTOSHOP SIZE"

CLICK THE BLUE BUTTON THAT SAYS "CREATE"

A BLANK WHITE RECTANGLE WILL OPEN UP.

THIS IS CALLED YOUR "CANVAS".

THE CANVAS IS WHERE YOU WILL DO ALL YOUR DRAWING.

CLICK THE FILE TAB

SCROLL DOWN TO SAVE AS and this window will open

SET UP YOUR PHOTOSHOP WORKSPACE

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE CREATE A NEW LAYER IN THE LAYERS PANEL

BY WORKING IN SEPERATE LAYERS WE CAN ISOLATE ALL THE CHANGES WE MAKE TO OUR DOCUMENTS

THE "WORKSPACE" IS THE WINDOW THAT CONTAINS YOUR CANVAS AND ALL YOUR TOOLS AND SETTINGS

CUSTOMIZE YOUR WORKSPACE FOR ILLUSTRATION BY CLICKING THE TAB FOR:

WINDOW>WORKSPACE>PAINTING

THIS WILL CUSTOMIZE THE TOOLS AND PANELS THAT ARE OPEN TO THE MOST USEFUL FOR ILLUSTRATION

NOW YOUR WORKSPACE SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS.

NOTICE THAT THE TOOLS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PAGE HAVE CHANGED AND A NEW PANEL HAS OPENED UP.

CREATE GUIDES

WE ARE GOING TO CREATE BOXES FOR TESTING OUT OUR BRUSHES

CLICK THE "VIEW" TAB AT THE TOP, THEN "GUIDES", THEN "NEW GUIDE LAYOUT"

"NEW GUIDE LAYOUT" WINDOW OPENS AND SOME LINES POP UP ON YOUR CANVAS

CLICK TO CHECK THE BOX NEXT TO ROWS

CHANGE COLUMNS NUMBER TO 4

CHANGE ROWS NUMBER TO 3

CHANGE COLOR TO WHATEVER IS EASIER FOR YOU TO LOOK AT

THEN CLICK OK

NOW YOUR CANVAS HAS SQUARE BOXES ON IT

WORKING WITH THE BRUSH TOOL

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE CREATE A NEW LAYER IN THE LAYERS PANEL

BY WORKING IN SEPERATE LAYERS WE CAN ISOLATE ALL THE CHANGES WE MAKE TO OUR DOCUMENTS

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRUSHES TO CHOOSE FROM

CLICK ON THE "GENERAL BRUSHES" FOLDER AND SELECT "SOFT ROUND"

THE BRUSH TOOL

CLICK THE BRUSH ICON OR HIT THE LETTER "B" ON YOUR KEYBOARD

SET YOUR BRUSH SIZE TO AROUND 60 PX.

USE THE "SOFT ROUND" BRUSH TO MAKE HATCH LINES TO FILL UP ONE OF YOUR BOXES

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

REPEAT THIS PROCESS TO FILL EACH BOX WITH HATCHING MARKS

USE A DIFFERENT BRUSH FOR EACH BOX

BRUSH SIZE MUST BE UNDER 60 PX

CREATE YOUR OWN BONSAI TREE USING WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED ABOUT PHOTOSHOP BRUSHES AND LAYERS
